Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SEO A/B split testing for your Shopify store

A/B testing is the process of creating variations of your page titles and meta descriptions to see which ones perform better in search results. This app is focused on one key metric: CTR (Click Through Rate). It allows you to test two versions of a page's title or meta description against each other to see which one has a higher Click Through Rate.

CTR is one of the most important metrics for SEO. Pages with higher CTRs relative to their competitors rank higher in Google because Google wants to show the most relevant pages to users. By improving a page's CTR, you can increase your rankings and get more organic traffic without changing your content or building more backlinks. It's a low effort way to improve your SEO!

While it's technically possible to do A/B testing manually, it's incredibly time-consuming and error-prone. You would need to:

  • Manually track which pages to test
  • Create and implement different versions
  • Collect data from Search Console and track it in spreadsheets
  • Calculate statistical significance
  • Monitor and update each test regularly
  • Implement winning versions

Our app automates this entire process, saving you hours of work each month. It also ensures statistical accuracy, proper test implementation, and provides alerts when tests are complete. Many of our customers tried manual testing first but found it unsustainable for more than a few pages. This app makes it easy to keep track of dozens or even hundreds of tests at a time!

Our app connects to your Google Search Console account to get data about how your pages perform in Google search results. When you create an experiment, the app:

  1. Measures your current performance (baseline)
  2. Tests your new title/description
  3. Compares the results and tells you which version performs better
  4. Automatically implements the winner if you choose

Google Search Console is required as it's the only way to accurately measure how often people click on your pages from Google Search results. The app needs this data to calculate your CTR and determine which version of your title or description performs better.

If you don't have it set up yet, it's free and takes about 5 minutes to create an account at search.google.com/search-console/about.

You can still install the app and look around, but you need a Google Search Console connection to start creating experiments. The app relies on GSC data to track impressions and clicks for your pages.

We highly recommend setting up Google Search Console for your Shopify store even if you don't use our app. It's a free and valuable tool that provides insights into your site's search performance and helps identify SEO issues.

Our app only requests the minimum permissions needed to function properly. For Shopify, we need access to read and modify your products and online store pages to implement the SEO changes. For Google, we need read-only access to your Search Console data.

For full details on our data practices and the permissions we request, please see our Privacy Policy.

No, testing your titles and descriptions won't directly affect your rankings. Our app adheres to Google's recommended methods for testing, ensuring a single element is tested at a time following best practices to prevent any negative impact on your SEO.

In fact, if you find a version that gets a higher CTR, Google tends to rank those pages higher over time. This is why A/B testing page titles and meta descriptions is so powerful.

The number of experiments you can run depends on your plan. The free plan includes one active experiment. You can upgrade anytime to run more concurrent experiments. All plans include features like auto-implementation of winners.

Start with your highest-traffic pages that have a low CTR (Click-Through Rate). These pages have the most potential for improvement. When you connect your Google Search Console account, the app will immediately create a list of your high potential opportunities so you can get started right away!

This depends on the traffic and CTR of your page! Pages with lots of impressions (views) can usually be tested for a shorter period of time. Don't worry though, the app will analyze the traffic data for each page and recommend the best length for your experiment. Minimum tests are 14 days per variant, so around 28 days for a single test (but this can vary depending on how long it takes Google to recrawl your page). Don't worry, the app handles all of this automatically!

The best titles and descriptions are clear, relevant, and compelling. They should accurately describe your page while encouraging clicks. Some tips:

  • Include your main keyword
  • Add a clear benefit or call-to-action
  • Use numbers or specific details when relevant
  • Keep titles under 70 characters and descriptions under 160 characters

No, you can only run one experiment at a time for testing integrity. We need to isolate the effect of each experiment on your CTR. Running an experiment on the title and meta description at the same time would mix the effects of both experiments and make it impossible to tell which one is responsible for the CTR change. However, you can create multiple experiments on different pages at the same time.

Unfortunately, we don't support testing your homepage at the moment. This is due to Shopify's API limitations. We are constantly monitoring the Shopify API for changes, so this feature may be available in the future!

No - you need to be an established seller with decent traffic in order to start A/B testing, otherwise you won't have enough data. To effectively A/B test a page, the page should have around 200-300 daily impressions to the specific page, but ideally more (1,000). Lower traffic pages can be tested, but the test duration will be longer.

If you're just starting out, we recommend focusing first on building your store, creating quality content, and implementing basic SEO practices. Once you've established some consistent organic traffic, A/B testing becomes much more valuable and statistically valid.

If you are an SEO newbie, here are a few tips and resources to get you started:

  • Work on creating high quality content for your target audience. Do detailed keyword research to find the best keywords to target.
  • Build backlinks to your site by reaching out to other websites and other influencers in your niche and asking them to link to you. If you are creating valuable content, they will be happy to link to you!
  • Make sure your website is mobile-friendly and loads quickly.
  • Come back to this app in 3-6 months once you have more traffic and data to test!
  • This SEO guide is a great resource to learn the basics

Lastly - ask for help when needed. Engage in Reddit conversations and ask questions in the Shopify forums. Heck, we'd even be happy to help you out if you're stuck! So many people have helped us along the way and we're happy to pay it forward.
